Hello, Goodbye, and a Word of the Year

The Little Postcards - December 2022

I remember when 'word of the year' held such a buzz on social media. How women were choosing to embrace a word over a set of strict resolutions and allowing themselves an opportunity to look at a wider view of their desires and needs. I don't know if others are still holding true to their word, or if, as with so many social media trends which have come and gone, 'word of the year' has slipped silently into the ether. For me, it did not. 

My word for 2022 was a big one: heal. It led me somewhere I did not expect. During the healing process, my husband and I had some pretty raw conversations - about our loves and our challenges and what we want our future to look like - and it led us to completely change our lives. We left the North West behind, home to us both for the past thirteen years, and with a tremendous leap of faith, we have moved to a tiny village in rural Oxfordshire. Despite all that we enjoyed about Cheshire, there was a void it could not fill. Life is hard when you're separated from the people you love - and we'd had our fill of hard living. 

It has been six weeks in our country life and whilst I wish I could say it has been easy (no central heating during -8° temperatures?) I can feel a future for us here. We see sheep from bedroom windows and a willow that weeps golden sunshine in the afternoons. There is a lot of work to be done both inside the house and out, so for the next 12 months I predict my role will include some significant grafting. I am ready for it, enough that I am prepared to take a break from some writing and part of that means I must say goodbye to our Little Postcards. I wish I could keep sharing them with you but the simple fact remains that they cost money to send and if I'm not writing, I'm not earning. In this instance, my head has had to win over my heart. 

However some tiny, crimson sparks have been teasing me into trying out a new venture in 2023. As it grows, I will share this on my blog where you will find the comments section always open. Snippets will, of course, be shared on my Instagram too.

I have yet to decide on a new word for 2023 - I am torn between grow and settle. I wish to do both in our new life in the country, but I am not sure which will win out for the coming year… Have you chosen a word or are you a resolution setter?
